Gilgit and the Polo tournament

5. November 2008

I am back in Gilgit (the north of Pakistan) where everything is much colder: the water, the air and standing in the shades. But the air is much much cleaner the people more relaxed and the scenery more beautiful. Once a year there is the Polo tournament where people come from the neighbored areas to figure out which town is the best. So, I went to the Polo tournament and would like to tell you some

1) musicians support the great event since there are not any people in the audience supporting their favorite teams with songs or shouts.

2) between the plays the musicians play music, the audience is running on the play field to congratulate he players or watch some tough men, who have the courage to dance to the music.

3) the game is hard nevertheless the case I am talking about freestyle polo here: no fouls no helmets and the ball flies high, hit people in the audience or players.

4) a horse falls in the audience at I am lucky enough to be there in the right moment

5) there are no benches and people sit where ever they can. In this case they found a place on the wall which separates the stadium from the outside.

6) the whole play takes place in front of the local mosque.

7) the players age is very much open. As soon as the players are in strong conditions to ride the horse and hit the ball they start to play polo. The player age reaches from 17 to sometimes up to 70 years old.

So, in the end a pretty awesome thing to watch.

Danke Florian! You have introduced us to Pakistan through your observations and photos. We are cocerned for your safety and well-being wherever you travel. We are also very excited that soon you will be in India. I’m glad you will have time in the south, the “real” India as we like to say. Eat some dosa for me! You looked very chic in your new black salwaar kameez or however it is called when it’s on a man’s body.

Hey, in little over a month you will have to be the tour guide for S and Z. I hope you will be prepared for the role! You may need to study a little about Deutschland before they arrive. Zoe is excited to be going on a journey to a new land. She’s been wearing the suit which you picked out for her, telling us that information. She’s doing well in her swimming lessons. Today she was learning the butterfly!

Shawnee is putting together a hot pot tonight for us and some others. I’m sure she would rather have you cutting and cutting up in the kitchen, then me. Could you transport yourself here very quickly? She would be very surprised and happy. So would we.

Salaam, Jennifer (und Rick)
